The Best Asian Garlic Shrimp Recipe!

Growing up, my mom was always in the kitchen, dancing around to her tunes in bejeweled flip-flops and cooking. One of my favorite things ever that she cooked was spicy shrimp. Today’s recipe for Asian garlic shrimp is inspired by her amazing cooking abilities, dance moves, and of course, the flip flops.

If you love super flavorful, spicy and slightly sweet garlic deliciousness, this Asian Garlic Shrimp has your name all over it. I’ve employed two of my favorite spicy condiments: Sambal oelek and sriracha along with zesty ginger to boost this dish into your soon-to-be all-time easy dinner faves category. Let’s make this!

Asian Garlic Shrimp ingredients - raw shrimp, soy sauce, garlic, garlic salt, oil, toasted sesame oil, ginger, brown sugar, water, sambal oelek chili sauce, and sriracha.

Garlic Asian Shrimp Ingredients

  • Shrimp – use store-bought peeled and deveined shrimp to save time and energy!
  • Soy sauce
  • Garlic – 2 cloves of freshly minced garlic add just the right amount of garlic flavor since 3 extra cloves are already in the marinade.
  • Toasted sesame oil – remember to use toasted for that big aromatic flavor.
  • Ginger – freshly minced ginger is spicy, slightly sweet, giving a tasty kick to this recipe.
  • Brown sugar
  • Sambal Oelek & sriracha – twice the spice with my two favorite spicy Asian condiments, also used in honey teriyaki salmon.

Recipe Notes & Tips

Don’t skip the quick marinade: just 10 minutes of marinating will add so much delicious flavor to your garlic shrimp!

What to serve with Asian Garlic Shrimp: try blistered green beans, delicious ramen noodle salad or Asian salad.

To use frozen shrimp: thaw shrimp in the refrigerator over night, or rinse in or submerge cold water until thawed.

How to skip the spice: if you’re not a big fan, use less of the sambal oelek and sriracha or try this garlic butter shrimp instead.

  • In a large bowl, stir together shrimp, soy sauce, garlic, and garlic salt until well mixed. Cover and let sit about 10 minutes in the refrigerator.

  • Bring a large pan with the oil to medium high heat. Swirl to coat the surface of the pan. Add shrimp (leaving behind the marinade in the bowl) and sear on each side for about 1-2 minutes until golden. Transfer to a new bowl.

  • Reduce heat to medium and add sesame oil. Once heated, add garlic and ginger, cooking until fragrant and golden (about 30 seconds).

  • Add water, brown sugar, sambal oelek, soy sauce, and sriracha. Stir until combined. Bring to a simmer and cook for 2-4 minutes, until slightly thickened, like a runny sauce.

  • Add shrimp and gently toss to coat. Cook for about 1-2 minutes, stirring occasionally until sauce thickens.

  • Serve with the sauce from the pan. Garnish with red chili peppers, scallions, and sesame seeds. Serve with Yum Yum Sauce.
