My First Season: Stephen, Michael, Haadi & Brian

We round off our latest visit to MAN v FAT Soccer’s newest recruits with trips to Texas and Pennsylvania.

How’re the guys faring as their first season enters into its second half? What are they seeing mentally and physically? Here’s what they had to say.

Stephen Arbour, Elkins Park

What physical and mental changes are you noticing since you got started on the program?

Biggest mental change is a compulsion to track my calorie intake by the end of each day. Scoring points for my team just for tracking is good motivation! Biggest physical change is post-workout pain and suffering lasts a little less each week.

What has been the best moment for you so far at one of your MAN v FAT Soccer sessions?

Best moment was hearing a teammate lose 20 pounds in the first six weeks of the program! A few of us have been getting together on Sundays for pick up games at the park, and comparing notes on how the experience is going.

What has become your go to meal to help your weight loss? And what remains your favourite meal to reward yourself for a good week’s efforts?

Honestly? Dannon light Greek Yogurt; it’s low on calories, high on protein, and sweet enough to count as dessert!

Michael Vayner, Katy

What physical and mental changes are you noticing since you got started on the program?

Physically: I’m actually able to bend over and touch my toes now without bending my knees. Clothes are starting to fit a little looser. My belt clicks a couple more notches.

Mentally: I’m feeling better about my appearance and being able to concentrate on work better. More confidence when I speak to clients.

What has been the best moment for you so far at one of your MAN v FAT Soccer sessions?

It was couple weeks ago when almost the entire Katy club tracked their weekly food intake and the club broke through the 100lb lost mark. It really is showing with the community we’ve created here how much we care for each others successes on and off the pitch.

What has become your go to meal to help your weight loss? And what remains your favourite meal to reward yourself for a good week’s efforts?

Go to meal is actually my Carnivore Snax Wagyu Brisket. It provided lots of protein and fills me up so i stay away from the bad stuff during the day!

My go to cheat meal is wings from my favorite place, WING IT!

Haadi Hassan, Katy

What physical and mental changes are you noticing since you got started on the program?

I am getting in better shape and mentally I am more oriented towards my growth. The competitive aspect of losing weight has been really motivating because I don’t want to let the team and myself down.

What has been the best moment for you so far at one of your MAN v FAT Soccer sessions?

For me, the best moment from MAN v FAT has been seeing my friends join the league and seeing them thrive. I initially signed up as a solo effort, but being able to see friends join and do so well in the group has been a joy.

What has become your go to meal to help your weight loss? And what remains your favourite meal to reward yourself for a good week’s efforts?

My go to weight loss meal has been the grilled nuggets from Chic Fil A. I don’t get a lot of cooking done, so I eat out a lot and those have great macros and been helpful with the journey. My favorite way to reward myself with food is directly after the game is going to On The Kirb and getting the Shrimp Cavatappi Pasta.

Brian Thorpe, West Houston

What physical and mental changes are you noticing since you got started on the program?

Physical challenge for me has been trying to stay active enough during the week to make sure that I have enough stamina to play most the game. If you stay too sedentary, you won’t be able to perform at a high enough level versus staying active throughout the week which gives you a better chance of performing well.

The mental challenge has been continuing to make cleaner choices for my meals. It’s easy to just stop and grab fast food when you are hungry but trying to stay disciplined enough to buy healthier food that you can easily prepare at home to save on your calories for the day.

What has been the best moment for you so far at one of your MAN v FAT Soccer sessions?

Best moment so far was this past Monday, had some great saves as keeper and then played the last ten minutes out in the field and scored two goals. Felt good to help my team on both sides of the ball.

What has become your go to meal to help your weight loss? And what remains your favourite meal to reward yourself for a good week’s efforts?

My go to meal has been my breakfast. Grab a Atkins Milk Chocolate protein shake which gets me through the first part of the morning and then I snack on a fruit bowl made up of pineapple, strawberries and blueberries. Keeps me full until lunch and doesn’t burn through too many calories. Favorite meal to reward myself would probably be BbQ HEB chicken fajitas with some grilled peppers and onions on HEB Butter tortillas or a couple of beers as long as I stayed under my calorie goal for the day.
