Apple Monkey Bread Recipe

How are you liking our Monkey Bread Series? First we started with the classic monkey bread, then we indulged in cinnamon roll monkey bread, and now we have the incredible, apple fritter-inspired apple monkey bread recipe!

When I first started working on this series, I wanted to make something my sister Jenny would love (she’s a total monkey bread fanatic). But then, I realized that she also loves apple turnovers… I mean, who wouldn’t? So why not combine the two flavors for the most incredible recipe for apple monkey bread?

From this apple fritter monkey bread recipe, you can expect soft and warm cinnamon sugar apples nestled in pillowy layers of biscuit pieces coated in buttery sweet caramel glaze. This homemade bread is mind-blowingly good for breakfast, dessert, heck even an afternoon treat!

Apple Cinnamon Monkey Bread Ingredients

  • Sugar & Cinnamon: we’ll be coating both the apples and the biscuits with a cinnamon sugar mixture for twice the flavor
  • Apples: green apples yield the best flavor, with its natural tartness offsetting the sweetness of this recipe
  • Biscuits: use refrigerated buttermilk biscuits for a recipe speedup
  • Butter & Brown Sugar: cooked thoroughly together, these two simple ingredients make for the best monkey bread glaze!

Tips

  • Dice apples into ½” cubes, any bigger and they won’t cook completely through.
  • Don’t use more apples—1 ½ cups is perfect and won’t cause overflow in a 12-cup bundt pan.
  • Cook the butter and brown sugar together until it’s one liquid—meaning there’s no separate yellow layer of butter on top. This ensures a smooth and glossy, delicious glaze.
  • Use a gallon zip bag to coat the biscuit pieces in cinnamon sugar. The bag will look a bit too full, but don’t worry, it’ll work. Just keep shaking until every biscuit piece is fully coated.

How Do I Know When It’s Done?

After baking for about 42 minutes, carefully remove the pan from the oven with mitts. Use a fork to spear a piece from the center of the caramel apple monkey bread. Tear it in half, and if there’s no uncooked dough, then it’s done!

How Do I Get The Monkey Bread Out Of The Pan Easily?

  • Make sure to coat every nook and cranny of your bundt pan in nonstick spray. Then, right before adding the biscuit and apple layers, coat it again (the spray usually drips down while you’re prepping everything).
  • Fully bake this apple monkey bread recipe (test for doneness with my tips above), then cool in the pan for 10 minutes, any longer which causes it to stick to the pan.
  • Tap it multiple times to loosen it onto a plate. Give it a shake, if it doesn’t release, turn it back over and use a butter knife to loosen the sides.
  • 12-cup bundt pan – my favorite, go-to bundt pan for making cakes and all kinds of monkey bread!
  • Pizza cutter – by far, the easiest and fastest way to slice refrigerated canned biscuits into quarters for apple fritter monkey bread.

  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Whisk together ¼ cup sugar and ½ teaspoon cinnamon in medium bowl. Add apples, stirring and folding until well coated. Set aside.

  • Add ½ cup sugar and 2 teaspoons cinnamon to a gallon zip bag, seal and shake until well mixed. Using a pizza cutter, cut biscuits into quarters and drop into bag. Shake until biscuits are well coated.
  • Thoroughly grease a 12-cup bundt pan. Creating even layers, place half the apples into the pan, then half of the biscuits. Repeat. Discard leftover biscuit sugar.
  • Melt brown sugar and butter in a medium saucepan over medium low heat. Stirring frequently, cook until the two ingredients become one cohesive liquid, like caramel (no separate yellow layer of butter on top). Pour evenly over biscuits.

  • Bake for 42-46 minutes, until deep golden brown and cooked in the center.* Cool in pan for 10 minutes on a cooling rack. Cover with a plate, then hold both securely with oven mitts and turn over onto the plate, tapping the pan to loosen. Enjoy!
