These 5-ingredient mashed potatoes are our most popular Thanksgiving recipe! My husband’s favorite side dish, they’re rich, creamy, and delicious.

Ever since I met my husband Jack, he’s been raving about his Uncle Billy’s mashed potatoes. Rich, creamy, and topped with what Jack calls “butter lake,” they were his favorite side dish at Thanksgiving growing up.
I can’t say I’m entirely sold on the butter lake part, but Jack has helped me perfect my mashed potato recipe over the years. At this point, he says that it’s just as good as his Uncle Billy’s…if not better. I have to agree that they’re the best mashed potatoes I’ve tried.
Here’s why we love these mashed potatoes:
- They have an amazing creamy texture and rich flavor. Thanks to butter, yes, but also sour cream. It makes these potatoes insanely creamy and adds tang. Garlic gives them nice savory depth too.
- They’re super easy to make. You only need 1 pot and 5 ingredients!
- They’re the perfect vessel for toppings. While Jack piles on the butter, I go all in on the mushroom gravy. Its velvety texture and umami flavor take the potatoes to another level!
We’re not the only ones who can’t get enough of these potatoes. In fact, every Thanksgiving, they’re our most-made recipe on the blog!
L&L reader Aviella commented, “Delicious mashed potatoes! I made them for the Thanksgiving meal, and they were so creamy!”
Heather wrote, “Found this recipe on Thanksgiving and have made it three times since! Perfection!”
If you’re looking for a crowd-pleasing side dish for your holiday table, I hope you’ll try these potatoes. They’re easy and delicious—you and your guests will love them!

Want to make this recipe? Here are a few tips:
- Two types of potatoes are better than one. You can use either russets or Yukon Golds in this recipe, but we actually like it best with a mix. The Yukon Golds are super creamy, and the russets are fluffy. It’s the perfect combination!
- You can make them ahead. In fact, I almost always make them a day or two before the holiday. They reheat well in the microwave or covered in a 350°F oven. If they feel dry at all, simply stir in a little milk to loosen them before serving.
