Best Things To Do On The Gold Coast, Queensland

If you’re looking for a travel guide packed with the best things to do on the Gold Coast, Queensland, you’re in the right place. If you’re passing through the Gold Coast on your East Coast Australia itinerary or as part of a larger Queensland trip, there are definitely some bucket list adventures waiting for you here on the Gold Coast, and I’m going to lay them all out so that you can pick the ones that feel most aligned to you.

But first, where is the Gold Coast, I hear you ask? The Gold Coast is located on the southeast Queensland coast and is a stretch of coastline that runs around 40-50km between Beenleigh/Paradise Point (in the north) and finishes where it meets the New South Wales border (in the south) at Coolangatta/Tweed Heads.

From world-class surf breaks to rainforest trails, National Parks, nightlife, and stunning golden sands galore… the Gold Coast is an area of Australia that can entertain, ground, inspire, exercise and take you on the adventure of a lifetime – all in one day. It’s truly the definition of ‘something for everyone’, making it a great location to tick off some major Australian lifestyle experiences in one place.

Get your bucket lists at the ready, let’s tuck in, shall we?

P.s. As you know, Australia is a HUGE country. If you’d like ALL my travel guides, tips and recommendations in your back pocket when you’re here travelling, I’ve created an Australia Google Map which is the ultimate travel resource that you can get lifetime access to (yep, all the updates too). How to Get To The Gold Coast, Queensland

  • By Air: The Gold Coast Airport in Coolangatta offers domestic flights from all major Australian cities and limited international connections (including direct flights to Bali and New Zealand). Brisbane Airport is also nearby (about an hour’s drive north) for additional domestic and international options.

If you’re planning to make the most out of the Gold Coast beaches and the hinterland adventure, I’d highly recommend hiring a car for this adventure.

  • By Car: Driving the coastal highway from Brisbane is a popular way to explore the Gold Coast and hinterland at your own pace. Likewise, a 30-minute drive North of Byron Bay will take you to the southern Gold Coast.

Where to Stay on The Gold Coast, Queensland

  • For outdoor adventurers, there are coastal holiday parks, hinterland cabins, and hotels near national parks such as Lamington NP and Springbrook NP.
  • If you’d prefer to stay on the coast, I recommend Burleigh Heads, Palm Beach, or Coolangatta for easy access to beaches, trails, and river adventures.

Best Time to Visit The Gold Coast, Queensland

For this mid-coast region, the best times to visit are similar to those of Byron Bay and Sydney.

  • Spring (September–November) & Autumn (March–May) are ideal months for hiking, exploring waterfalls, and enjoying quieter beaches out of the summer heat.
  • Summer (December–February) are ideal months for watersports, warm ocean swimming, and beach time (though it can be very busy during the school break).
  • Winter (June–August) are ideal months for mild temperatures, fewer crowds, and excellent for hinterland walks, whale watching, and scenic drives.

Here are the best things to do on the Gold Coast (in my humble opinion). This isn’t an extensive list, but it certainly covers nearly all of the ‘bucket list’ adventures here on the Gold Coast. If you think there is one that I’ve missed, please leave me a comment. I live in the area, and I’m forever adventuring and updating these guides as I discover new gems.

Soak up the opportunity to surf

This area of Australia is known for its world-class surf breaks, but amongst the advanced-level spots, there are also beginner-friendly options that will allow you to soak up the gorgeous waters and beaches of the Gold Coast too. Here’s a little low down of some of the spots to check out:

Snapper Rocks – A world-famous point/reef break delivering long, fast right-handers when it’s on. Best left to experienced surfers, with heavy crowds and powerful sections that reward confidence and control.

Greenmount Beach – A more forgiving point break that still serves up clean, peeling rights. Ideal for intermediate surfers stepping up, especially on smaller days with smooth, cruisy lines.

Kirra Beach – An iconic sand-bottom point break known for its speed and barrels. Suited to advanced surfers in good swell, but mellows out on smaller days for confident intermediates chasing long rides.

Burleigh Heads – A powerful point/reef break with punchy sections and serious flow. Best for intermediate to advanced surfers who like fast take-offs and rippable walls.

Currumbin Alley – One of the Gold Coast’s most beginner-friendly point breaks, with soft, rolling waves and sheltered conditions. Perfect for beginners, longboarders and cruisy sessions.

Main Beach – A classic beach break with shifting sandbanks and plenty of space. Great for beginners and intermediates, especially when the swell is small and the points are busy.

Broadbeach – A punchier beach break offering short, playful peaks. Best for intermediate surfers wanting fewer crowds and more room to experiment.

Explore Springbrook National Park & Natural Bridge

Just a short 40-minute drive from the heart of the Gold Coast, Springbrook National Park is a lush escape into ancient rainforests, stunning waterfalls, and epic look out and picnic spots. It’s a perfect day trip option (or overnight adventure) for your time in Queensland and one of the best things to do on the Gold Coast.

Consider:

  • Purling Brook Falls
  • Natural Bridge cave (look out for glow worms)
  • Best of All Lookout and Canyon Lookout

Hike the Gold Coast Hinterland

In addition to Springbrook NP, Lamington National Park is another must-visit for swapping beach vibes for lush rainforest adventure. Both parks are packed with waterfalls, lookouts, and mossy hikes for all fitness levels.

The best Gold Coast hinterland hikes include:

  • O’Reilly’s Tree Top Walk (Lamington): 1–2 km gentle walk through the canopy for wildlife and rainforest views.
  • Purling Brook Falls Circuit (Springbrook): 4 km loop through rainforest and behind thundering falls.
  • Twin Falls Circuit (Springbrook): 4 km of boardwalks and stepping stones past two stunning waterfalls.
  • Best of All Lookout to Canyon Track (Springbrook): 2–3 hours linking iconic lookouts and rainforest trails.
  • Box Forest Circuit (Lamington): 10 km past waterfalls, streams, and ancient trees.

Green Mountains / Mount Tamborine Trails (Lamington) – Interconnected tracks with lookout points; 1 hour to full-day options.

Kayak or Paddleboard on the Gold Coast Canals

Kayaking or paddleboarding on the Gold Coast’s canals is one of the most relaxing ways to explore the city from the water. Calm, sheltered canals wind past waterfront homes, mangroves, and hidden wildlife, making it perfect for beginners and experienced paddlers alike.

There are multiple rental options along the coast, including All Coast Paddleboard hire (Tallebudgera Creek), Seaway Tours (Broadwater) and Cheyne Horan (Surfers Paradise)

If you prefer a guided experience, you might like to try the Broadwater Discovery tour or the sunset twilight kayak tour in Surfers Paradise.

Picnic at Burleigh Hill or Currumbin Valley

For a chilled Gold Coast escape and something relatively cheap to do whilst visiting the Gold Coast, pack your favourite picnic snacks and head to Burleigh Hill or Currumbin Valley for sunset. Enjoying sunset colours over the water is one of the best things to do on the Gold Coast.

Burleigh Hill sits right at the northern end of Burleigh Heads Beach, with easy parking along The Esplanade or small spots near the hill itself. Get your dose of sunset views, have your favourite drink in hand and watch the surfers below.

Currumbin Valley is a short drive inland (about 20 minutes from Burleigh), with parking available at the Currumbin Valley Reserve or along Guineas Creek Road.

Have dinner or drinks at Burleigh Pavilion

This is one of my favourite spots and best things to do on the Gold Coast for sure. I mean… look at that view!

For a fancy little twist at the end of your Gold Coast day, jump in the ocean and grab dinner or sunset drinks at Burleigh Pavilion.

Perched right on the sand at Burleigh Beach, this spot offers unbeatable ocean views (see below), fresh seafood dishes, and a breezy, relaxed vibe that’s perfect for sunset cocktails and a social vibe.

It’s easy to get to, with parking nearby on The Esplanade or in surrounding streets, and the casual yet elevated atmosphere makes it ideal for everything from a romantic dinner to a laid-back catch-up with friends. Order your favourite glass of white and soak up the iconic Gold Coast beachside landscape.

Whale Watching & Dolphin Spotting

Seeing humpback whales and dolphins off the Gold Coast is a must, especially between the migration season (June to November). Tours depart from Main Beach, Surfers Paradise, and Southport, giving you the best chance to spot breaching whales and playful dolphins. Some popular operators to check out include:

  • Spirit of Gold Coast – relaxed cruises with expert commentary
  • Sea World Whale Watch – longer tours with great viewing decks
  • Gold Coast Whale Watch – smaller groups, personalised experience
  • Whales in Paradise – intimate tours for up-close encounters
  • Blue Seafaris – eco-friendly, small-group adventures

Most tours can be booked online and offer morning or afternoon options to suit your schedule.

Enjoy the beaches of the Gold Coast

No Gold Coast trip would be complete without spending time on the world-famous beaches that call Gold Coast home. Here’s a little outline of what vibe is on offer at each beach:

  • Surfers Paradise – surfing, sunbathing, and nightlife.
  • Burleigh Heads – consistent surf, scenic headland, and relaxed vibe.
  • Currumbin Beach – great for families and beginner surfers, with calm sections and tidal pools.
  • Broadbeach – cleaner, quieter sands with nearby cafes and restaurants.
  • Main Beach – wide, golden sands and less crowded than Surfers
  • Coolangatta / Snapper Rocks – legendary surf breaks for advanced surfers and scenic coastal views.
  • Palm Beach – laid-back atmosphere and quieter waves, ideal for a relaxed beach day.
  • Tugun Beach – family-friendly with surf schools and calm areas for swimming.

With lifeguards on duty and easy parking at most spots, the beaches are perfect for both action-packed days and spontaneous post-work hangs.

Visit the best brunch and coffee spots on the Gold Coast

In Palm Beach and along the Gold Coast, the brunch and coffee scene is not to be missed. There are some seriously good spots weaved into these streets. Some spots that I love include:

  • Commune in Burleigh for fresh, healthy bowls and excellent coffee
  • The Wedge Espresso in Mermaid Beach for expertly brewed brews
  • Paddock Bakery in Burleigh for brunch and takeaway baked treats
  • Love Street Store in Kirra for relaxed vibes and killer lattes.
  • Bam Bam Bakehouse in Mermaid Beach for flaky pastries
  • ELK Espresso in Broadbeach for creative waffles and brunch
  • The Winey Cow in Main Beach for elevated breakfast classics

Whether you’re chasing a quick coffee, a leisurely brunch, a post or pre hike fuel or Instagram-worthy eats, you’re spoilt for choice on the Gold Coast! ENJOY!

Walk the Burleigh Head National Park Coastal Track

For a scenic escape right on the coast that doesn’t take up a full day, try the Burleigh Head National Park Coastal Track. I checked it out a couple of weeks ago after an afternoon visiting camping shops on the Gold Coast and I loved it!

It offers a 3.2 km loop that hugs the coastline, weaving through rainforest, rocky headlands, and open lookouts with amazing views (see below) of Burleigh Beach and out across the ocean. It’s suitable for most fitness levels, with well-marked trails and plenty of spots to pause, snap photos, or watch surfers below. Parking is available near Burleigh Hill or along The Esplanade, making it an easy half-day adventure for both locals and visitors.

Explore Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary

Get up close with kangaroos, koalas, and wombats, or watch entertaining shows featuring birds, reptiles, and other native wildlife at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary also has treetop rope courses and wildlife encounters for a more hands-on experience.

There is on-site parking, and tickets can be booked online in advance to skip the queues. Whether you’re looking for a fun day with the kids or a chance to connect with Australia’s unique wildlife, Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the best things to do on the Gold Coast.

Spend a day in Tambourine Mountain

Another epic day trip from the Gold Coast is Tamborine Mountain. I stopped a few weeks back to check out the brand new floating bathhouse after taking a dip in a nearby waterfall. What a dream combo. Here are a few of my recommendations if you plan a day trip from Gold Coast:

  • Hit the rainforest trails at Tamborine National Park: home to a network of lush walks through subtropical forest, perfect for morning exploring.
  • Waterfalls to check out:
Cedar Creek Falls: a popular spot with cascades and scenic rockpools
Curtis Falls: easy stroll to a shaded waterfall and viewing platform.
Witches Falls walking track: scenic rainforest tracks with seasonal falls and lagoons.
  • Relax and unwind at SOL Elements Bathhouse & Spa: the new Japanese‑inspired wellness retreat with thermal pools, saunas and float caves set in tranquil hinterland surrounds (a true treat after hiking).
  • TreeTop Challenge, Mt Tamborine
  • Swing by the village for a walk around the cafes, galleries and boutique shops

Catch an event at Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre, Broadbeach

This is Broadbeach’s premier hub for concerts, expos, pop culture experiences, trade shows and big gatherings right near the beach. The venue regularly hosts huge events, exhibitions and live performances. It’s also a favourite spot for industry expos, conferences, gala dinners and community award nights. There’s usually something on whether you’re into music, culture, business or family fun. I recently watched Gabor Mate here, and it was so inspiring. If you’re on the Gold Coast for a while or living here, keep an eye on the calendar and switch up your date night for a night here!

Check out the full events calendar and book tickets ahead on the official schedule here.

Visit Tallebudgera Creek

For a more tranquil day on the water, head to Tallebudgera Creek, a calm estuary perfect for swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding, or just relaxing by the water. Tallebudgera Creek is just south of Burleigh Heads, about a 5–10 minute drive from Burleigh Beach. It’s technically its own suburb (Tallebudgera), but many visitors from Burleigh can reach it in minutes.

The creek is family-friendly, with shallow sections, picnic spots, and grassy areas ideal for a sunny lunch or escape from the busier surf beaches.
