What is Dumpling Sauce?
If you’ve ever wondered, “What is the brown sauce served with dumplings?” or, “What sauce comes with dumplings, anyway?” Well, dumpling sauce is a dipping sauce originating from Chinese cuisine. It’s made with a base of soy sauce, vinegar and chili and used for dipping so many yummy foods!

What is in Dumpling Sauce?
Dumpling sauce ingredients can vary from recipe to recipe, but most use a base of soy sauce, chili, and sesame oil, with a few optional add-ins.
- Garlic: with 2 cloves, we are not playing! Make sure it’s freshly minced for the best flavor.
- Chili oil & chili sauce: I highly recommend Lao Gan Ma chili oil and Huy Fong Sambal Oelek chili sauce. Amazing flavor, and my mom-approved!
- Rice vinegar
- Soy sauce: I like low sodium, but use whichever you prefer.
- Sugar
- Sesame oil – make sure to use toasted sesame oil, which has a far more robust and concentrated flavor than regular.
- Sesame seeds

How to Make Dumpling Sauce Easy!
This simple condiment is so easy to make, it literally takes one step (and an additional one for sides!).
- In a small bowl, whisk together ingredients: garlic, rice vinegar, chili oil, soy sauce, sugar, sambal oelek, sesame oil, and sesame seeds. Whisk vigorously until well mixed.
- Serve with dumplings, spicy honey teriyaki salmon, and over cucumber salad.
How to Make Dumpling Sauce Less Spicy
If you follow my recipe, your homemade dip will have plenty of heat. But if you’re not into that, simply add the spicy ingredients in last, in very small increments. You can even skip the sambal oelek chili sauce. Or, go with a milder sauce altogether, like garlic butter sauce.
