What is Alfredo Sauce?
Alfredo sauce is a rich Parmesan and butter-based sauce originating from Italy. It is often made with heavy cream and garlic. Seen in Italian cuisine, this sauce is usually served tossed with fettuccine pasta. It’s also used in dishes like chicken fettuccine Alfredo, shrimp Alfredo, pizza and more.
What is Alfredo Sauce Made Of?
Our easy homemade Alfredo sauce recipe is made with a base of butter, garlic, heavy cream, and Parmesan cheese. Seasonings like garlic powder and nutmeg add and enhance the flavor.
- Unsalted butter
- Garlic – 3 cloves of freshly minced garlic add delicious flavor.
- Heavy cream – make sure to use room temperature heavy cream for an even, smooth sauce.
- Parmesan cheese – freshly-grated Parmesan is tastiest, but you can use store-bought for added convenience.
- Seasonings – garlic powder, salt, pepper, and ground nutmeg for classic Alfredo sauce flavor.

How to Make Homemade Alfredo Sauce
- If you just made this pan seared chicken breast, go ahead and use the same pan (the remaining herbs are awesome in this sauce.)
- Melt butter over medium heat in a sauté pan. Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
- Stir in heavy cream, garlic powder, salt, nutmeg, and pepper, then increase heat to medium high. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to medium.
- Slowly stir in Parmesan, cooking until smooth and thickened, about 3 minutes. Enjoy!
Q&A
How to Thicken Alfredo Sauce? If you find that your homemade Alfredo sauce is too thin, cook it for about a minute longer on the stove to remove excess moisture. Bear in mind, it will thicken once cooled a bit. You can also add more Parmesan to thicken the sauce.
How Long Does Alfredo Sauce Last in the Fridge? This Alfredo sauce recipe lasts about 3 days if cooled, then sealed in an airtight container in the refrigerator. For a homemade sauce that lasts longer, try making garlic butter sauce or balsamic glaze.
Can You Freeze Alfredo Sauce? Yes, but it will change in texture once thawed, so I don’t recommend it. You can thaw it overnight in the fridge, or gradually reheat it on the stovetop while whisking to re-blend the ingredients together.
