Instant Pot Jasmine Rice – Recipe Diaries

If you’ve ever cooked jasmine rice on the stove and ended up with a sticky mess or undercooked grains, the Instant Pot is about to be your new best friend. This method gives you perfectly fluffy, fragrant rice every time—no babysitting a pot or worrying about boil-overs.

As a food blogger and recipe developer, I’ve made jasmine rice a lot. I love pairing it with stir-fries, grilled meats, and even meal prep bowls. The Instant Pot not only makes it foolproof, but it’s also faster and easier than stovetop cooking.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

During the week, I like to have a few carbs prepped for easy cooking on the go, and Instant Pot Quinoa is also easy to make. Making a batch of jasmine rice in the Instant Pot is pretty much the same as making quinoa.

Ingredients Needed

Here’s all you need for basic Instant Pot jasmine rice:

  • 2 cups jasmine rice – Rinsed well until water runs clear to remove excess starch. I get the Simply Nature brand from Aldi.
  • 2 cups water – Equal ratio for perfectly tender grains.
  • ½ teaspoon salt – Optional, but enhances the flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon oil or butter – Helps prevent sticking and adds a subtle richness.

Substitution Tips:

  • For extra flavor, swap water for chicken or vegetable broth.
  • Add a pandan leaf or a slice of ginger to the pot for aromatic rice.
  • Use coconut milk for creamy, Thai-inspired coconut jasmine rice (adjust liquid ratio to 1 ¾ cups coconut milk + ¼ cup water).

How to Make Jasmine Rice in Instant Pot

Step 1 Rinse the Rice – Place the jasmine rice in a fine mesh strainer and rinse under cold water until the water runs clear. This step is key to preventing gummy rice.

Step 2 Add to Instant Pot – Pour the rinsed rice into the Instant Pot insert. Add water, salt, and oil or butter.

Step 3 Set the Instant Pot – Close the lid and set the valve to Sealing. Select Pressure Cook (or Manual) and set the timer for 4 minutes on High Pressure.

Step 4 Natural Release – When the cooking cycle ends, let the pressure release naturally for 10 minutes. After that, turn the valve to Venting to release any remaining steam.

Fluff & Serve – Open the lid and fluff the rice gently with a fork. Serve hot.

Pro Tips for the Best Jasmine Rice

  • Don’t skip the rinse – This makes a huge difference in texture.
  • Equal parts rice and water – Perfect balance for fluffy but moist grains.
  • Natural release matters – It lets the rice finish cooking without getting mushy.
  • Batch cooking – Double the recipe if you have a 6-quart or larger Instant Pot.

Storing & Reheating

  • Fridge – Store cooled rice in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
  • Freezer – Portion into freezer-safe bags and freeze for up to 3 months.
  • Reheat – Add a splash of water and microwave covered for 1–2 minutes, or steam in a pot until hot.

Once you try cooking jasmine rice in the Instant Pot, you’ll never go back to the stovetop method. It’s fast, effortless, and delivers fluffy, fragrant rice every single time. Whether you’re making it for a weeknight dinner or a big batch for meal prep, this is a kitchen hack worth keeping in your back pocket.
