Make It an Asset Now

Today’s article asks a very simple question? Is your health an asset or a liability? We know from many people who tell us how to “get rich” that we get richer when we buy assets, hold assets and accumulate assets. And when all we have is liabilities, we get poorer. Read this article to help you take inventory of your own health, and see what your next step could be.

What is an Asset?

So what exactly is an asset? Well, quite simply, as Robert Kiyosaki, author of the book Rich Dad, Poor Dad put it, assets put money into your pocket. Liabilities take money out of your pocket. It’s that simple.

Is Your Health an Asset?

So let’s apply this thinking to your health. Does your health put money into your pocket? Or does your health take money out of your pocket? Is your health an asset to you or is it a liability to you?

How Much Do You Pay for Your Health?

So open up your bank statement, your credit card statement or your Rocket Money app or wherever you track your money.  Now take a look at your health spending. Beyond just how much you pay for vitamins and supplements and gym memberships, how much does your health cost?

Do you find that you spend money on your poor health? Do you spend money on doctor office visits? How about prescription medicines? Or on painkillers? Does your health cost you time lost from work due to sickness or illness? Have you passed up job opportunities and promotions because of your health? Have you limited how many hours you’ve worked because of your health? These are all on the liability side of the equation.

On the other hand, does your health enable you to take jobs? Jobs that other people cannot do? Are you able to work longer or harder than others because of your great health? Does your health help you focus mentally on the task at hand? Does your mood affect your work in a positive way?

Will Your Health be an Asset Down the Road?

Now, we can take this a step further. Let’s look down the road a year from now or five years from now. Or even 10 years from now. What will your health look like based on your current patterns of behavior? I’m talking about your sleep pattern, your eating pattern, your exercise pattern, and the way you handle the stresses in your life. So, based on how you’re handling your life now, what will your health look like down the road? Will your health still be an asset to you or will it become a liability if it is not one now?

What Do You Want Your Ideal Health to Be?

Too many questions, not enough answers. It would actually be nice to sit down with you right now and have a conversation. If we could do this, I would try to find out what you want your health to look like.  You know, what does a healthy Mike look like? Or  what does a healthy Elizabeth look like?  Some answers that I’ve gotten from other people are something like this: “I am able to move without pain; I can do whatever I want to do without being careful about falling or getting hurt.” Or, “I am free of inflammation so I sleep through the night and wake up with a clear mind. My body feels so light and energetic!” Or, “I am walking in the peace of God, trusting His every Word in every area of my life.” What does health look like and feel like to you?

What Do You Want to Change Right Now?

When you have an idea of what your life looks like when you’re healthy and well, you can start making steps. Start taking steps to get there from where you are right now. But maybe it’s not a top priority with you. Maybe you’re really busy with something else. Maybe you’re busy earning money, or raising kids or dealing with a tragedy in your own life (very sorry about that!). So, you can’t really deal with your own health right now.  And that’s fine because that’s the way life happens sometimes; we can’t always focus on health.

Are You Ready to Make a Change? How Much?

But if you are ready to improve some aspect of your health, what steps can you take so that your health is an asset instead of a liability? Well, it depends on where you want to start. It depends on what you want to work on first, really. What things are most important to you? Is fitness more important to you than a pure, healthy, wholesome diet? Is getting better sleep more important than making juice? If you have to pick on focusing on exercise or diet, which one is more important to you right now? Set goals for what is important to you, not based on what someone else wants.

So you decide what you want to work on first. As you gain ground in that area then you take what you learn from there and work on other areas, too. A lot of what you need to know to start you probably already know. (Or you can find out easily, as we live in the Information Age.) If you are like most people, you know more about health than you are actually practicing.
