The 4 Ms in Action
Let’s think about how the 4 Ms might come into play in a made-up scenario. Imagine there’s a Dr. Yang who has a patient named Mr. Lewis.
What Matters
At their most recent office visit, Dr. Yang asks, “What’s most important to you these days?” Mr. Lewis smiles and shares that staying active in his garden and being able to travel with his family are his top priorities.
Mobility
Knowing what is most important to Mr. Lewis, Dr. Yang checks his balance and leg strength. She suggests a few simple exercises to help him improve his stability and encourages him to take regular walks. She even offers tips on making his home safer by removing slippery rugs and adding handrails.
Mentation
During each appointment, Dr. Yang asks gentle questions about Mr. Lewis’s memory, mood, and sleep, making sure he feels comfortable sharing. She listens for signs of forgetfulness or sadness, and she reassures him that it’s okay to talk about feeling down or anxious.
Medication
Dr. Yang carefully reviews all of Mr. Lewis’s prescriptions — along with the vitamins and pain relievers he buys over the counter. She checks for any possible drug interactions, explains which combinations to avoid, and ensures that everything is safe and effective for him.
By focusing on what matters, supporting his mobility, checking in on his mental health and cognition, and keeping his medicines safe, Dr. Yang is helping Mr. Lewis enjoy life on his terms. The 4 Ms work together to help keep him active, independent, and feeling his best.
