Healthy watermelon smoothie

Looking for the perfect way to cool off in the summer heat?

In just a few seconds, you can whip up your own thick and slushy homemade watermelon smoothies, with just 2 ingredients!

This recipe was a summer staple during my teenage years. Growing up in Texas, I often hosted pool parties where my mother would bring tall glasses of cold fruit smoothies out for all of my friends. (My mom is the best.)

While there’s no longer a pool in my backyard, I do still own a blender. And happily, that is all you need to make your own smoothie-shop-worthy frozen watermelon beverages at home.

Watermelon smoothie ingredients

Fresh watermelon – Buy a whole watermelon at the store and chop it into squares at home, or save time and buy it already sliced or chopped.

If you cannot find a seedless watermelon, remove any hard black seeds before blending. Do not worry about removing the thin brown seeds.

Milk of choice – I love dairy free almond milk or coconut milk here. You can use any plain or vanilla milk you have on hand, including oat milk, skim milk, or soy milk.

Protein Powder (optional) – If you are looking for an easy way to increase protein in your diet, throw in a scoop of your favorite protein powder to create a creamy watermelon protein shake.

Sweetener of choice – Especially if your milk and protein powder are unsweetened, you may wish to blend in a tablespoon of pure maple syrup, honey, sugar, or a sprinkle of stevia to accentuate the natural sweetness of the watermelon.

How to make a watermelon smoothie

  1. Start by removing and discarding any watermelon black seeds you see.
  2. For best results, slice and freeze the watermelon ahead of time in an airtight container. Using frozen watermelon gives you a deliciously frosty smoothie without diluting the flavor by adding ice.
  3. Add the frozen fruit, milk, and optional protein powder and sweetener to a blender. Blend on high until thick and smooth.
  4. Pour into two cups, serve and enjoy.
  5. If you do find yourself with leftovers, cover and store in the refrigerator for up to three days. Or freeze in an airtight container and thaw before serving.

Fun flavor ideas

Vary the fruit. Try replacing up to half the watermelon in the recipe with chopped frozen strawberries, pitted cherries, blueberries, raspberries, kiwi, honeydew, or mango.

Give it a tropical twist. Swap one cup of melon for frozen pineapple or ripe banana, and choose coconut milk or pineapple juice as the liquid.

Add a splash of lime. Blending in a tablespoon or two of fresh squeezed lime juice adds a tanginess that wonderfully compliments the sweetness.

Turn it into a breakfast shake. Instead of milk, use Greek yogurt for added probiotics, nutrition, and protein to keep you full until lunch.

Add ice cream. For a great summer dessert, blend in a spoonful of vanilla ice cream or top each finished smoothie with a scoop of Coconut Ice Cream.

Make it fancy. Pour into mason jars or milkshake glasses, and garnish with mint leaves, oranges, cucumbers, or glass straws and watermelon slices.

Health benefits of the recipe

This smoothie is a great way to rehydrate or stay hydrated, because watermelons are over 90% water.

The fruit is also a good source of antioxidants like vitamin C, lycopene, potassium, magnesium, and vitamin A.

It is high in the amino acid citrulline, which increases oxygen to the muscles and reduces muscle soreness. Try it as a post workout shake to aid in exercise recovery.

The watermelon smoothie can be low fat, high protein, very low in saturated fat, low sodium, cholesterol free, and dairy free.

For a vegan watermelon smoothie, simply choose a plant based milk. The recipe is also naturally gluten free and includes an added sugar free option as well.

2 ingredient Easy Watermelon Smoothie

I adapted the recipe from my Strawberry Smoothie and this Watermelon Juice.

  • 3 cups chopped watermelon (420g)
  • 1/3 cup milk of choice (80g)
  • 2 tbsp protein powder (optional) (14g)
  • sweetener of choice to taste, if desired
  • To make an easy watermelon smoothie, first slice watermelon into cubes. Remove and discard the hard black seeds. You may leave the thin brown seeds. For the thickest, coldest results, I recommend freezing the chopped watermelon before use. Once chilled or frozen, blend the fruit with the milk and optional protein powder and sweetener until smooth. Pour into glasses and enjoy.View Nutrition Facts
