Womb Health and Self Care

The womb is a seat of life-giving energy, in a literal and metaphysical sense. The health of one’s womb, yoni, and cycle of menstruation is directly tied to the relationship one has to creativity, intuition and pleasure, among many other symptoms and signals. For the focus of this article, we will be discussing the former, discussing the ways we treat our body physically and energetically to promote a quality of life the is rooted in life-giving ideas, passion, and intuitive knowledge.

Physical and spiritual meaning of reproductive system

The function of the reproductive system is for reproduction and pleasure, at a physical level it includes menstruation, ovulation and conception. This channel of reproductive system is called Artava Vaha Srotas in Ayurveda and it is largely a part of the Sacral Chakra. This channel carries nutrients to the female reproductive tissue, the ova, and includes the fallopian tubes, uterus, cervical canal, ovaries, areola around the nipples and yoni (vaginal passage and labia).

The Sacral Chakra is responsible for fertility, creativity, sensuality, abundance, passion, desire and it creates self-esteem and procreation. This energy brings the juice of life! It’s the alluring force that pushes us to enjoy life, fall in love, and feel emotions.

Self care rituals for the reproductive system

Don’t hold in natural urges: Ayurveda generally recommends for us to not suppress any natural urges, which includes gas, urine, and burps well as our passions and desires for love. Your body is wise and it knows what it needs intuitively, but we often become disconnected to this internal knowing through distractions, judgement, and societal expectations.

Womb meditation: Our mind is a potent tool for clearing energy and healing. Take a comfortable and relaxed seat somewhere quiet. Bring your attention inward and to your yoni and womb space. As you shift your attention to this space, recognize any tension you may be holding and gently send your breath to that region to release any tense muscles. Allow yourself to feel the emotions that come up when you take your mental gaze internal. Whatever emotions come up, feel them, without judgement and observe them, allowing them to pass. Notice the desires that may come up and take note of them. After your meditation reflect on how those desires can bring passion and enrichment into your life.

Aloe vera: The week leading up to when you expect your period take 1 TBsp of aloe vera gel 3 times a day. This medicine can prevent menstrual pain and discomfort.

Warm milk: Drinking a cup of warm almond milk at night and after sex can aid in nourishing the reproductive system.

The womb is a beautiful sacred and intelligent space that can channel enjoyment in life. By reflecting on our personal desires and how we go about getting those desires, we can learn a lot about the energy channeled through one’s womb space. Ultimately, cultivating love for yourself and treating your body and womb as a a wise sacred space will provide guidance along your path to a fulfilling and authentic life.
