Whenever I see articles about the best places to go in North London (whether itβs coffee, restaurants, or anything else), theyβre always focused on this tiny pocket of so-called North London (Islington, hello) β and almost no one ventures past Zone 2. Honestly, most guides stop at Finsbury Park and never go further.
The Best Coffee Spots in North London: From High Barnet to Wood Green
So here I am to fix that and share the best coffee spots in North London that actually focus on Zone 3 and beyond! Weβll cover areas like Muswell Hill, Finchley, Hampstead, Wood Green, Cockfosters, Southgate, High Barnet, Bounds Green, Enfield and more β pretty much across the boroughs of Barnet, Haringey, and Enfield.
Iβve been living in North London for over seven years. I used to live in East Finchley, right by Muswell Hill, and now Iβm in Southgate β but I often head out to all corners of Barnet and Enfield with my little one while on maternity leave. And of course, coffee is what we mums need to survive those long days!

Best Independent Coffee Shops in North London (Zone 3 and Beyond)
For this list, Iβve avoided chains like Gailβs, Hagen, and WatchHouse. Theyβre everywhere in North London (and I do often grab a coffee there), but it wouldnβt make sense to include them here.
- Tintico (Finchley) β In my opinion, Tintico has the best coffee in North London. They also have a spot in Central London, so technically itβs a mini-chain, but Finchley Central is lucky to have them.
- The Old Bank (East Barnet) β A fairly recent opening, and probably the most family-friendly place on this list (they even run baby classes in a separate section). Itβs also the prettiest coffee shop here, right in the heart of East Barnet, giving the area serious extra points!
- Nkora (High Barnet) β Minimalist, stylish, and right across from Gailβs. It looks like a cafΓ© youβd expect in Central London. Coffee and sandwiches are both excellent.
- Campbell & Syme (East Finchley) β A small independent cafΓ© thatβs actually pretty famous across North London. They roast their own beans and supply lots of other coffee shops across the city.
- Astrid Bakery (Muswell Hill) β A tiny hole-in-the-wall bakery serving excellent coffee. Theyβre planning to expand and open a proper cafΓ© nearby β watch this space.
- Rosetta (Muswell Hill) β A lovely little coffee shop with excellent coffee and matcha, right in the village centre.
- The Grocery Post (Highgate) β Primarily a small grocery store, but they also serve very good coffee. Super convenient, just steps from Highgate Tube.
- Coffee Island (Southgate) β Part of a small Greek chain, with a huge variety of beans and preparation methods. Their freddos are incredible β if youβre ever in Southgate, Palmers Green or Cockfosters, you must try the espresso freddo.
- Stantons Coffee House (Bush Hill Park, Enfield) β Always buzzing on weekends, with locals queueing for their coffee and pastries.
- Equus (Trent Park) β The coffee here is solid, but the real standout is the location: inside Trent Park Equestrian Centre, with a panoramic window overlooking the riding grounds. A hidden gem.
- Ethereal (Southgate) β A new opening offering interesting drinks like mushroom lattes and different bean options β something you rarely find this far out from Central London.
Thatβs my take on the best coffee in North London, Zone 3 and beyond! Do you have any favourites Iβve missed? Drop them in the comments β Iβll try to visit and add them to the list.
