Dates, Meaning and Where to Attend Abroad

Thirty thousand people a night, sometimes more. That is how many came to St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dubai for the evening novena in December 2025, according to Gulf News, most of them Filipinos. It is the clearest proof that this nine-night Christmas tradition never stayed in the Philippines. It travels with us.

Wherever you spend December (Quezon City, Queens or Kuwait), this guide gives you the Simbang Gabi 2026 dates, what the Masses mean and where Filipino communities abroad held them last year, from Los Angeles and Toronto to the UK, Melbourne, Hong Kong and the Gulf. It also covers what changes when you attend outside the Philippines, how to find a schedule near you, and what to sort out if you are flying home for it.

Simbang Gabi 2026 at a glance

The dawn Masses run for nine days, from Wednesday 16 December to Thursday 24 December 2026. That is the same 16 to 24 December pattern the Church in the Philippines follows every year, as Wikipedia’s entry on the novena summarises and Philstar’s report on the Archdiocese of Manila’s 2025 advisory repeated.

What 2026
First dawn Mass Wednesday 16 December
Last dawn Mass Thursday 24 December (Christmas Eve)
Evening (anticipated) Masses Tuesday 15 to Wednesday 23 December
Fourth Sunday of Advent Sunday 20 December (day five)
Christmas Eve Special non-working day in the Philippines
Christmas Day Friday 25 December, regular holiday

A few things worth knowing before you set an alarm:

  • Dawn times at the big Manila churches started between 4am and 5:30am in 2025. For 2025, the Archdiocese of Manila said morning Masses could start at 5:30am and the evening Masses from 6pm, as Philstar reported. We could not find 2026 guidance yet when we checked in late October, so treat those times as last year’s pattern.
  • Evening Masses are held the night before each dawn Mass, which is why they start on 15 December and end on 23 December.
  • Holidays. Under Proclamation No. 1006, 24 December 2026 is a special non-working day and 25 December is a regular holiday. That makes the last dawn Mass and the Christmas Eve Mass easier for workers in the Philippines.
  • Abroad, dates shift. Many parishes overseas hold the novena in the evening, and some start earlier or end on 23 December. More on that below.

What Simbang Gabi means, and why it starts before dawn

Simbang Gabi means “night worship”, usually rendered “night Mass”, although most of the Masses happen in the dark hours before sunrise. The practice dates back to 1669, during Spanish rule. Priests moved the evening novena to before dawn so farmers could hear Mass before work in the fields. Wikipedia also notes an earlier order from Pope Sixtus V that Mass be heard before sunrise during the harvest season.

You will hear two other names. The dawn Masses are also known as Misa de Aguinaldo (aguinaldo is Spanish for a Christmas gift). Misa de Gallo, the “rooster’s Mass”, is the name usually given to the last one, on 24 December.

Liturgically, these are votive Masses in honour of the Virgin Mary. Unless the day falls on an Advent Sunday, the priest wears white and the Gloria is sung, which feels a little like Christmas arriving early in the middle of Advent purple.

Then there is the wish. Ask almost any Filipino family and someone will tell you that if you complete all nine Masses, your prayer request will be granted. It is a folk belief, not Church teaching, but it keeps whole barkadas setting alarms at 3:30am for nine days straight. If you want the wider picture of how we celebrate, our guide to Christmas customs and traditions in the Philippines covers the parol, Noche Buena and the rest.

What happens at the Mass, and after

The Mass itself is a normal Catholic Mass, about an hour long, often with a choir singing Filipino Christmas songs. The atmosphere is what you notice first: churchyards strung with lights, parols over the doors, and a crowd that spills out into the plaza at the big parishes.

The parol has a direct link to the novena. These star lanterns were first used to light the way to church for people walking to the pre-dawn Mass. Today they hang everywhere from Pampanga to Parañaque, and abroad they show up in parol parades and blessings.

Then comes the food, and for a lot of people this is half the reason to go. Outside nearly every church you will find stalls selling bibingka, rice cakes cooked with heat from above and below, and puto bumbong, purple sticky rice steamed in bamboo, topped with butter, sugar and grated coconut. They usually come with hot chocolate or salabat, ginger tea.

A few practical notes from the parish side of things:

  • Arrive 20 to 30 minutes early at a big church in the Philippines. Standing room fills fast, especially on the first night and the weekend.
  • Dress modestly but warm enough. December mornings in Baguio are cold, and in Toronto or Seoul they are freezing.
  • Bring small bills for the food stalls. Most are cash only.
  • Check the parish page the week before. Times change from year to year, and many parishes only post the schedule in December.

Metro Manila churches: last year’s times as a guide

Parishes publish their 2026 schedules closer to December, so the best guide right now is what they did in 2025. These times come from GMA News’ 2025 Metro Manila list and the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

Church Evening (from 15 Dec) Dawn (from 16 Dec)
Manila Cathedral, Intramuros 8pm 4:30am
Quiapo Church 7pm and 8pm 4am and 5am
Baclaran Church 8pm 4am and 5:30am
EDSA Shrine 7:30pm 5:30am
CCP, Pasay (free, open to the public) Christmas Eve only, 8pm 5am

The Manila Cathedral also had Christmas Eve Masses at 6:30pm and 8pm in 2025. Expect similar times in 2026, but confirm on each church’s Facebook page in early December. Mall chapels in Makati, BGC and Ortigas also run evening Masses, which are popular with office workers.

If you are planning the rest of the month, our Philippines in December guide covers weather, festivals and where to go.

Where to attend Simbang Gabi abroad

Pope Francis put it well when he led the novena Mass for Rome’s Filipino community in St. Peter’s Basilica on 15 December 2019. “Thanks to Filipino migrants,” he said, “this devotion has crossed national borders,” as Vatican News reported.

Overseas, the biggest difference is the clock. Most parishes abroad hold the novena in the evening, because people have work the next morning, and some run it from 15 to 23 December so the last night does not clash with Christmas Eve. Here is where Filipino communities gathered in 2025, and in a few places in earlier years. Use it as a starting point, then check the 2026 schedule with the parish.

United States

  • Los Angeles. More than 100 churches in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles held the novena in 2025, starting on 15 December. The opening Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels began with a parade of parols, which were blessed at the end of Mass, per the archdiocese.
  • Chicago. 55 parishes took part in the archdiocese’s 39th annual novena, 15 to 23 December 2025. Filipino Catholics in Chicago have held evening novena Masses since 1986, according to the Archdiocese of Chicago.
  • New York. The Philippine Consulate General runs “Simbang Gabi sa Konsulado” at the Philippine Center’s Kalayaan Hall. The 37th edition in 2025 ended on 12 December, well before the usual 16 December start, and the 2026 series may begin in early December, so check the consulate’s page in November.

Canada

  • Toronto. Our Lady of the Assumption, 2565 Bathurst Street, held 8pm novena Masses nightly from 15 December 2025, and also had a 5pm Tagalog Mass on Sunday 21 December, per its parish bulletin.
  • Calgary. Sacred Heart Parish ran a nine-evening novena in 2025.

United Kingdom

There is no single national list, so the parish and your local Filipino chaplaincy are the best sources. Two examples: St Peter’s Catholic Church in Gorleston, near Great Yarmouth, began an evening novena in 2024, and in 2025 some hospital staff swapped shifts to attend, per the Diocese of East Anglia. In London, the Dominican church of Our Lady of the Rosary and St Dominic on Southampton Road, NW5, planned a full nine-night novena with Filipino priests in 2018. Ask the parish whether it will run again in 2026.

Australia

  • Melbourne. The archdiocese listed more than a dozen parishes for 2025, most with 5am dawn Masses in the western and northern suburbs, plus evening Masses such as St Brigid’s in North Fitzroy at 7:30pm, per Melbourne Catholic.
  • Canberra. The Philippine Embassy joined the opening Mass at St Peter Chanel Church in Yarralumla on 15 December 2024.
  • Sydney. Our Lady of Dolours in Chatswood has held a 5:30am dawn novena with a Filipino chaplaincy, as SBS reported in 2017. Check with the parish for 2026.

Middle East

The Gulf draws some of the biggest crowds outside the Philippines.

  • Dubai. St. Mary’s Catholic Church sees between 30,000 and 35,000 people a night, mostly Filipinos, according to Gulf News. Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle led Mass there in December 2025.
  • Abu Dhabi. Almost 18,000 OFWs filled St. Joseph’s Cathedral for the third night on 17 December 2025, per Radio Veritas Asia.
  • Kuwait. Holy Family Cathedral in Kuwait City, St. Therese Church in Salmiya and Our Lady of Arabia in Ahmadi have held 4:30am dawn Masses, as the Kuwait Times reported in 2019.

If you are spending Christmas away from home, our list of ways to make Christmas special for OFWs has ideas beyond the novena.

Asia and Europe

  • Hong Kong. St. Joseph’s Church on Garden Road held the novena at 9pm through 23 December 2025, with the Philippine Consulate General and community groups.
  • Singapore. The Church of St Bernadette listed 8pm novena Masses in December 2025.
  • Kuala Lumpur. The Philippine Embassy and the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist ran the novena in 2024, at 6:30am on weekdays and 8am at weekends.
  • Tokyo. The Philippine Embassy sponsored Masses at St. Anselm Meguro Church and the St. Ignatius Church chapel in Yotsuya on 23 and 24 December 2025.
  • Paris. More than 400 Filipinos attended the first night of the 2024 novena at the Chapelle Sainte-Bernadette.

How to find a novena Mass near you

If your city is not on the list above, there almost certainly is one, it is just not in a news article. Here is how to find it:

  1. Search your diocese’s website for the novena by name or for its Filipino or Asian ministry page. US and Canadian dioceses usually publish a full list in late November or early December.
  2. Check your Philippine embassy or consulate’s Facebook page. Many co-sponsor one night of the novena and post the parish schedule.
  3. Ask in the local Filipino Facebook group or the Filipino choir at your nearest Catholic parish. They will know within minutes.
  4. Watch for the start date. Abroad, the first Mass might be on 15 December, or more than a week earlier, as in New York.
  5. Joining online? Many Philippine parishes stream their Masses. Remember the time difference: a 4:30am Mass in Manila is 8:30pm the night before in London and 3:30pm the afternoon before in Toronto.

Flying home for the nine Masses

If you are a balikbayan hoping to complete all nine nights at your home parish this year, the planning starts now, not in December.

Flights. Fares into Manila for the week before Christmas are usually among the highest of the year. Our guide on when to book Christmas flights to the Philippines explains the timing, and you can compare fares into Manila, Cebu and Clark on Trip.com.

Where to stay. If you want the old churches of Manila for the novena, staying in or near Intramuros puts the Manila Cathedral and San Agustin Church within walking distance, which matters at 4am. You can compare rooms near Intramuros on Stay22.

Data. A local eSIM saves you from hunting for a SIM shop at NAIA at midnight. You can set up a Philippines eSIM with Airalo before you fly. For the rest of the trip, our balikbayan travel checklist for coming home at Christmas covers eTravel, baggage and arrival.
