This week saw MAN v FAT Soccer’s first ever launches in California, with groups joining us from Rancho Cordova and West Sacramento.
Elsewhere, our leagues that got started in May are approaching the end of their first season, so it’s time to touch base with the guys to find out how they’re getting on!
Gamaliel Claudio, Katy

As the end of the first season approaches, how would you sum up your MAN v FAT experience to date?
I have encountered a group of great guys that have helped me to reach my weight loss goal. We walk the process together and encourage each other when situations got in the way and we wanted to give up!
What were your pre-season targets and have you managed to achieve those?
My target was to reach my BMI and with the help of God, family, team, and Zac (MAN v FAT coach) I was able to do it. YES!
What has been the biggest surprise to you, firstly when thinking about being a part of program, and secondly when it comes to your weight loss efforts?
The friendship, respect, encouragement and constant communication with my team. Being accountable, knowing that I will stand on that scale every week and the result affects, not only me, but my teammates as a whole inspire me to give my best and be consistent, that was a big surprise.
This season I discovered that I am capable of more than I thought possible. On a side note: now I need a whole new set of clothes as mine are too big!
Thank you MAN v FAT team for helping me and my family!
Stephen Baker, Carrollton Wednesdays

As the end of the first season approaches, how would you sum up your MAN v FAT experience to date?
It’s been a really positive experience! One of my big worries wasn’t the weight loss, but actually playing again. The body is old and breaking down, and I hadn’t played in forever.
There was a real worry that I’d embarrass myself. Instead, everyone has been really supportive and I feel I’ve found a real niche on the team. It feels good!
What were your pre-season targets and have you managed to achieve those?
I didn’t want to have any hard and fast targets, but I will admit I wanted to hit that 5% threshold. And I hit that! Got the paper and everything!
But that wasn’t the real goal, the real goal was to feel better about myself. And that’s been a huge success. I am more active, my doctor tells me my arthritis in my knee has improved, and I’ve even found the time to make it to the gym on a more regular basis.
What has been the biggest surprise to you, firstly when thinking about being a part of program, and secondly when it comes to your weight loss efforts?
The biggest surprise has been how progress hasn’t been remotely linear. I have had weeks with huge loss, even was the Biggest Loser one week, and others with none at all. But it hasn’t really been related to my efforts. The weight goes when it wants.
I’ve tried to stay consistent in my habits, but the results have been anything but. And it is hard to stay on the right path when that happens.
What’s cool is that now, at the end of the season, you can take a step back and look at the total results of the season. Its good to get out of the week to week grind so, well, it doesn’t feel like a grind.
Roberto Rodriguez, West Houston

As the end of the first season approaches, how would you sum up your MAN v FAT experience to date?
I’ve loved every single minute of MAN v FAT since I’ve joined and I’m looking to grow the community here around Houston and the surrounding areas!
What were your pre-season targets and have you managed to achieve those?
My pre-season targets were to hit both my 25% and 30% and so far I’ve only hit the 25% but I’ve already achieved so much in less than a year and I’m proud of that!
What has been the biggest surprise to you, firstly when thinking about being a part of program, and secondly when it comes to your weight loss efforts?
The biggest surprise for me was becoming an Assistant Coach and how welcoming and supportive everyone has been.
The biggest surprise to my weight loss efforts has been that weight loss doesn’t happen overnight and takes dedication and consistency on and off the pitch and on the scales. I’ve been really good at tracking everything and eating better and it shows in all the weight that I’ve lost.
Jon Niles, Elkins Park

As the end of the first season approaches, how would you sum up your MAN v FAT experience to date?
My experience has been amazing! I get to play the beautiful game, I’ve gained a group of like-minded friends, and I’m losing weight!
What were your pre-season targets and have you managed to achieve those?
My main target was to get back in shape and lose a significant amount of weight. I’d say I’ve reached those goals!
What has been the biggest surprise to you, firstly when thinking about being a part of program, and secondly when it comes to your weight loss efforts?
I was pleasantly surprised at how supportive and welcoming everyone has been. There’s plenty of friendly competition and lots of encouragement from everyone.
As far as weight loss, it’s been surprising what some fun soccer can do to the scales!
