Competition drives Aintree community to success

Our clubs in the north west of England have had a long standing success story with MAN v FAT, with a host of incredible weight loss outcomes.

One of the newer clubs in the area is Aintree and they too have had plenty of positives on the scales. They also had an Amazing Loser participant this year, with Mark McNally taking to the pitch in Walsall.

We caught up with coach Stephen McConville – who has himself had great success as a player at MAN v FAT – to find out more about the lads at Aintree.

Aintree is the newest club on Merseyside, how have you gone about giving it its own identity and personality?

Coming into the club, it was important to create something that felt unique and set us apart from others in the region. A big focus has been on making sure the lads are enjoying themselves, while also growing a strong sense of community. We’ve looked to expand beyond just MAN v FAT matchday by encouraging additional games and interactions throughout the week.

To build on that identity, I also created a dedicated community website for the league. It includes team badges, results, and other features, all designed to give the club a more individual feel and really strengthen that sense of belonging.

You’ve seen some really strong weight loss outcomes in the club, how have the guys driven each other on to hit those landmarks?

The lads at the club are naturally very competitive with each other, and that’s been a huge driver. Extra games during the week, along with regular communication through WhatsApp groups, help keep everyone motivated and accountable, with a bit of encouragement from me along the way.

Newcomers also play a big part – they bring fresh energy and competition, which really helps push those who may have reached a plateau or seen their progress slow down.

If any guys in the area are thinking of joining up, what would you say to persuade them?

It can genuinely change your life. I know that because it changed mine when I started my journey as a player. I’ve played with and coached lads of all abilities: some with real footballing talent, others with none at all, and everyone in between – from those who can move comfortably to those who might struggle with basic fitness.

The key thing is that the doors are open to absolutely anyone, regardless of ability. Come down, have a chat with the lads, watch a session, and give a taster a go – once you see it for yourself, you’ll understand exactly what the club is all about.
