Pediatric oncology nurse recognized for volunteer service helping children impacted by cancer experience the joy of summer camp
Independence Blue Cross (IBX) and the Philadelphia Flyers today announced Stephanie Scoma as the first IBX Caring MVP, recognizing her five years of volunteer service with Ronald McDonald House Camp creating a safe, supportive and joyful experience for children and families affected by pediatric cancer.
A pediatric ICU/oncology nurse at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Stephanie began volunteering at Ronald McDonald House Camp while studying nursing at Temple University. Five years later, camp remains an important part of her life, and she regularly encourages her patients to experience it for themselves.
Stephanie goes all in to help campers feel comfortable being themselves. She dresses in silly outfits, sings off-key, leads camp chants and jumps into the pool at 7 a.m. for the polar bear swim. She helps children feel supported and safe while creating opportunities for them to connect with other kids who understand what it means to have cancer in their lives.
Her commitment is especially personal in the relationships she builds. Each summer, rather than taking a traditional vacation, Stephanie spends a week sleeping in a bunk bed and caring for a cabin of 10 girls. This year, one of her former patients was among them, and Stephanie’s familiar presence and sense of humor helped the young camper through moments when she missed her parents and home.
“Stephanie Scoma gives her time, energy and heart to make a meaningful difference for others, and that is exactly what we hoped to celebrate when we created IBX Caring MVPs. She creates a space where kids can feel understood and, most importantly, just be kids. We’re proud to recognize her as our first IBX Caring MVP,” said Koleen Cavanaugh, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer at Independence Blue Cross.
As an IBX Caring MVP, Scoma will receive tickets to the November 3 Philadelphia Flyers game, special recognition during the game, a customized Flyers jersey, and a Flyers and IBX swag bag. The program also includes a $500 donation to the nonprofit organization of the winner’s choice.
IBX Caring MVPs recognizes volunteers whose service makes a meaningful impact on individuals, families and neighborhoods throughout the region. Six honorees will be recognized during the Flyers’ regular season from November 2026 through April 2027.
