Jake keen to keep up his progress with MAN v FAT

MAN v FAT Basingstoke member Jake Simms is closing in on two important landmarks and puts his successes down to a supportive and collaborative community that has helped him during his time on the programme.

In the coming weeks, Jake is aiming to surpass 50kg lost since getting started and to achieve his 40% weight loss.

A part of the Borussia Munching Big Macs team, Jake enjoys his weekly sessions at the club, saying: “The biggest thing for me is the community and the friendships. It’s such a supportive and social environment — everyone is there for similar reasons, and there’s no judgement. That makes a huge difference. You’re not just turning up to lose weight, you’re part of a group that genuinely encourages each other and celebrates progress together. That social side has been key to keeping me consistent.”

Jake has enjoyed a remarkable transformation since getting started in March 2023 and has based that on steady progress over his time with the programme.

He added: “For me, it was hitting around 20 stone that really became the tipping point to turn things around. MAN v FAT worked because it combines structure, accountability, and enjoyment in a way that typical weight loss approaches don’t.

“The weekly weigh-ins, team-based scoring, and football element keep you engaged and motivated, but equally important is the mindset shift around consistency and realistic progress. It’s helped me build habits that actually stick rather than quick fixes.

“Long term, it’s about maintaining where I am now and continuing to build on it. I’ve lost around 35% of my body weight — going from 128kg down to about 81kg — and I’m closing in on 40%, so it’s about sustaining that progress. More than anything, it’s about staying healthy, keeping active, and making sure the changes I’ve made remain part of my lifestyle going forward.”

Jake and the other lads in the Basingstoke club are led by the current MAN v FAT Coach of the Year, Emma Evans, who picked up the accolade at the recent MAN v FAT Awards.

And he believes that that title is very much deserved, adding: “Emma’s been brilliant. She’s incredibly attentive and really takes the time to understand each person individually. What stands out is that she remembers what you’ve told her — she’ll check in on how you’re getting on without needing to be reminded, which makes the support feel genuine and personal.

“She’s always on hand with practical advice, tips, and small changes that make a big difference, whether it’s around activity or diet. That level of care and consistency has definitely helped keep me on track.”

If Jake’s successes have tempted you to get started, it’s worth noting that our clubs across Hampshire have funded places available, meaning that you get your first fourteen weeks covered by the team at Hampshire County Council.

Jake is keen to welcome new faces to his club, saying: “I’d say just go for it. It’s helped me massively. It’s nowhere near as intimidating as you might think — everyone is in the same boat, and the coaches and players all want you to succeed.

“It’s a great bunch of people who support each other, but also have a lot of fun along the way. If you’re even considering it, it’s 100% worth giving it a try.”
