Travel guide to Cambodia – Luxury Travel Expert

Cambodia is a captivating Southeast Asian destination where ancient history, vibrant culture, and stunning natural beauty come together. Once the heart of the mighty Khmer Empire, the country continues to impress visitors with its remarkable architectural heritage, welcoming people, diverse landscapes, and authentic travel experiences.

While the world-famous Angkor Wat temple complex remains the main reason many travelers visit Cambodia, the country offers far more than its iconic archaeological treasures. From emerald rice paddies and remote jungle retreats to tropical islands with powdery white-sand beaches, Cambodia is full of surprises. Add a fascinating history, delicious cuisine, and warm hospitality, and it’s easy to see why Cambodia deserves a place on every traveler’s bucket list.

Cambodia Travel Guide: Best Time To Visit

Cambodia has a tropical climate with four distinct seasons:

  • The cool & dry season (November to February) is widely considered the best time to visit Cambodia. Expect sunny days, low humidity, and comfortable temperatures ranging from 26°C to 29°C (79°F to 84°F). Occasional showers can occur, but rainfall is generally limited.
  • During the hot & dry Season (March to May), temperatures climb into the mid-30s°C (mid-90s°F), and humidity levels can become uncomfortable. April is often the hottest month of the year. Although conditions are generally dry, rainfall may begin increasing in May as the wet season approaches.
  • Regular afternoon and evening downpours characterize the hot & wet season (June to August). Mornings are often sunny, while tropical showers typically arrive later in the day, bringing relief from the heat and humidity. The countryside becomes lush and green, making it a rewarding time for photography and nature lovers.
  • During the cool & wet season (September to October), temperatures become more pleasant, but rainfall reaches its annual peak. Heavy rains can occasionally cause flooding and make travel on rural roads more challenging. Beaches may be less appealing due to rough seas and cloudy weather. On the upside, fewer tourists mean lower hotel rates and a quieter travel experience.

Overall, the best time to visit Cambodia is from November through February, when weather conditions are most favorable for sightseeing and outdoor activities. However, weather patterns have become less predictable in recent years, and seasonal rainfall can vary from year to year.

Cambodia Travel Guide: How To Get There

Most international visitors arrive in Cambodia via one of the country’s three main international airports:

  • Located close to the capital Phnom Penh, Techo International Airport (KTI) is Cambodia’s primary international gateway, offering connections throughout Asia and beyond. Click here for a list of airlines that offer direct flights to Techo International Airport.
  • Opened in 2023, Siem Reap- Angkor International Airport (SAI) replaced the former Siem Reap International Airport. It serves travelers visiting Angkor Wat and the city of Siem Reap, Cambodia’s most popular tourist destination. Click here for a list of airlines that offer direct flights to Siem Reap
  • Sihanoukville International Airport (KOS) is Cambodia’s third largest international airport, and serves the area around Sihanoukville, alos known as the Cambodian Riviera. Click here for a list of airlines that offer direct flights to Sihanoukville.

When planning your trip, consider arriving at one airport and departing from another (for example, flying into Siem Reap and out of Phnom Penh). This can save valuable travel time and help avoid unnecessary backtracking.

Cambodia Travel Guide: Entry Requirements

Entry requirements for Cambodia vary depending on your nationality and may change without notice. Before traveling, always check the latest requirements with your government, airline, and the nearest Cambodian embassy or consulate.

  • Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your date of entry into Cambodia.
  • Travelers with damaged passports or missing pages may be denied entry.
  • Most visitors require a visa. Cambodia offers an e-Visa system for many nationalities, while visas may also be available through Cambodian embassies and consulates abroad.
  • Some nationalities may qualify for visa-on-arrival services. Always verify the latest regulations before departure.
  • Ensure you have proof of onward travel and sufficient funds if requested by immigration authorities.

Before you travel, it is always wise to review essential travel planning tips, purchase comprehensive travel insurance, and keep digital copies of important documents. Make sure to read my 10 tips to plan a worry-free trip.

Cambodia Travel Guide: Getting Around

Traveling around Cambodia is generally straightforward, although journeys can take longer than distances suggest. Road infrastructure has improved significantly in recent years, with upgraded highways connecting many of the country’s major destinations.

  • Buses remain the most affordable and popular way to travel between cities. Numerous private operators connect Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, Kampot, Battambang, and other destinations. Many long-distance services operate overnight, allowing travelers to maximize their sightseeing time while saving on accommodation costs.
  • For greater comfort and shorter travel times, deluxe minibus services operate on many major routes. These vehicles typically offer air conditioning, Wi-Fi, reclining seats, and a more comfortable travel experience than standard buses.
  • Domestic flights can significantly reduce travel times. For example, flying between Siem Reap and Sihanoukville takes less than an hour, compared to six hours by road. Several airlines operate domestic routes within Cambodia, making air travel a convenient option for luxury travelers and those with limited time.
  • Tuk-tuks are the preferred mode of transport for short journeys in cities and towns. They are inexpensive, widely available, and ideal for sightseeing. Since most tuk-tuks do not use meters, agree on a fare before starting your journey.
