Villa Ferrer Batanes Review: Boutique Stay in Mahatao

If you ask me, Batanes is one of those places in the Philippines that stays with you long after you leave — it is quiet, rugged, windswept, and dramatic in a way that feels almost unreal! Villa Ferrer

But for me, Batanes is not just another beautiful destination.
It is also the place where I grew up.

So when I finally returned to Batanes with my husband, Franck, who was visiting for the first time, and my parents, who had not been back in almost 20 years, the trip felt more personal than my usual travels. It was part family trip, part homecoming, part rediscovery… and throughout our stay, we were based in Mahatao at Villa Ferrer, a boutique hotel that fit the whole mood of the trip beautifully.

In a nutshell: what I appreciated most about Villa Ferrer was that it did not feel like a loud or overly polished hotel trying to compete with Batanes. Instead, it felt calm, homey, intimate, and quietly elegant. It’s the kind of place you want to come back to after a full day of exploring windy roads, dramatic coastlines, and sleepy island towns.

Come and check out this list of the best Batanes tours which features the best activities and guided packages to do in places like Basco, Sabtang, and more.

Villa Ferrer Batanes

Villa Ferrer is a boutique 5-bedroom villa/hotel located in Mahatao, Batanes, offering a more intimate stay compared to bigger or more commercial accommodations especially given its “home away from home” design and communal spaces like the kitchen, dining area, living area, and garden. As such, rather than feeling like a standard hotel, the property has the atmosphere of a private island home: bright spaces, thoughtful interiors, natural textures, balconies, ocean views, and several areas where you can simply sit, rest, and slow down.

That, to me, is exactly the kind of stay that makes sense in Batanes.

After all, Batanes is not really a destination I would rush through. You come here for the views, yes, but also for the silence, the wind, the early mornings, the dramatic skies, the simple meals, and the feeling of being far away from the usual noise of everyday life.

QUIET, HOMEY ATMOSPHERE. What stood out to me most was how peaceful the whole stay felt. Villa Ferrer did not feel like a busy hotel with people constantly coming and going. It felt more private, intimate, and relaxed — which made it especially nice for our family trip. After spending our days going around Batan Island, introducing Franck to the landscapes I grew up with, visiting relatives, eating local food, and later exploring Sabtang, it was comforting to return to a stay that felt calm and grounding.

BEAUTIFUL DESIGN DETAILS. The property has a soft, tropical-island elegance to it. Think natural textures, wood touches, woven accents, bright spaces, and interiors that feel warm without being overdone. It is stylish enough to feel special, but not so staged that it loses its sense of place.

OCEAN VIEWS AND PEACEFUL CORNERS. Villa Ferrer has several spaces where you can enjoy the scenery, including balconies and a rooftop area. Personally, I think this is one of the best parts of staying somewhere like this in Batanes: you do not always need a packed itinerary. Sometimes, the best moment is simply sitting somewhere quiet and looking at the sea.

A GREAT BASE IN MAHATAO. I also liked being based in Mahatao because it gave the trip a more peaceful rhythm. For travelers visiting Batanes for the first time, Basco may be the most familiar name because it is where the airport is located. However, Mahatao is also a lovely area to base yourself in, especially if you want a quieter and more relaxed stay.

From Mahatao, we were able to go around Batan Island, explore scenic viewpoints, enjoy the coastal roads, and later continue with the rest of our Batanes itinerary. The location worked well for us because we wanted the trip to feel slower and more personal, not rushed.

Villa Ferrer is also around 15 minutes by car from Basco Airport, which makes the transfer fairly easy. The property can also help arrange airport pickup, including options such as a private van or a traditional cogon trike, depending on your needs and preferences.

Rooms

Villa Ferrer has several room categories, including:

  • Raditan Room / Deluxe Suite
    • This is the master suite and is ideal for couples or travelers who want the most spacious and premium room option. It features a king-size bed, walk-in closet, balcony, and an en suite bathroom with a shower and stand-alone bathtub.
    • This would be a lovely choice for honeymooners, couples, or anyone celebrating something special in Batanes.
  • Pilñit Room / Deluxe Twin Bedroom
    • This has two twin beds, making it a practical option for friends or family members traveling together. It also has an en suite bathroom with a shower and stand-alone bathtub.
    • This room is ideal if you do not need a double bed but still want a comfortable boutique stay.
  • Hahan and Hanao Rooms / Deluxe Double Rooms
    • These rooms are great for couples or solo travelers who want a comfortable and scenic place to stay in Mahatao.

The rooms are designed with comfort and local touches in mind. Depending on the room category, guests can enjoy features such as king or queen beds, twin beds, en suite bathrooms, private balconies, ocean or mountain views, and spacious areas for resting after a full day outside.

Amenities & Experiences

Villa Ferrer is not the kind of property I would choose for flashy resort amenities. Instead, its strength is in comfort, atmosphere, thoughtful spaces, and curated experiences.

Some of the amenities and features include:

  • Special celebration and romantic dining setups
  • Air-conditioned rooms
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi
  • Starlink internet connection
  • Breakfast included with bookings
  • En suite bathrooms
  • Private balconies in select rooms
  • Rooftop area with ocean views
  • Kitchen, dining, and living areas
  • Airport pickup assistance
  • Private tours and curated Batanes experiences

BREAKFAST. Breakfast is included with bookings, which is always helpful when exploring a destination like Batanes. Since many tours and day trips can start early, especially if you are going to Sabtang, having breakfast arranged at your accommodation makes the day smoother.

WIFI & CONNECTIVITY. One practical thing I appreciated is that Villa Ferrer offers Wi-Fi and uses a Starlink connection. This is worth noting because internet connection in island destinations can be unpredictable.

ROOFTOP DINING. Villa Ferrer also offers rooftop dining and celebration setups, including options for proposals, anniversaries, and special dinners. With the ocean as the backdrop, I can see why this would be a memorable setting for couples. If you are visiting Batanes for a honeymoon, anniversary, proposal, or birthday trip, this is something worth asking about in advance.

TOURS. Another useful feature is that Villa Ferrer offers private Batanes tour packages covering places such as North Batan, South Batan, and Sabtang Island. This is especially helpful for first-time visitors who want a more arranged and comfortable experience. For families, couples, or travelers who do not want to deal with too much planning, having your stay and tours coordinated through the same property can make the trip a lot easier.

That said, Batanes is heavily affected by weather, especially when it comes to Sabtang boat crossings, so flexibility is important. I would avoid overpacking your itinerary and leave some breathing room for schedule changes.

SERVICE & HOSPITALITY. What made our stay even more pleasant was the hospitality! Villa Ferrer’s staff were all so warm and friendly that our stay feel less transactional and more personal. This was important to me because our trip was not just a typical vacation. I was returning to the place where I grew up, bringing my husband there for the first time, and traveling with my parents who had not been back in almost 20 years! Because of that, I really appreciated staying somewhere that felt truly welcoming. The team was helpful, the property felt well cared for, and the overall experience was easy and comfortable — exactly what you want after long days of exploring Batanes’ cliffs, roads, viewpoints, churches, beaches, and villages.

Basic Info of Villa Ferrer

  • Address: Paz Street, Mahatao, 3901 Batanes, Philippines

  • Hotel Classification: 4-Star

  • Check-In: 2PM / Check-Out: 11PM

  • Starting Rates: Starts from around ₱4,500 per night in low season (includes breakfast)

To add, there are some things you need to remember when booking with Villa Ferrer:

  • This is not a big resort. Do not expect a large resort with many facilities. Villa Ferrer’s appeal is its boutique, homey, intimate feel.
  • Book early. Batanes has limited accommodation options compared to more mainstream Philippine destinations, and Villa Ferrer is a small property. If you are set on staying here, it is best to book ahead.
  • Check the latest rates. Rates can vary depending on season and room type, so always check directly with the property for the most accurate pricing.
  • Batanes weather can affect travel plans. Flights, tours, and especially Sabtang trips can be affected by weather. Build flexibility into your itinerary.
  • Mahatao is quieter than Basco. This is a plus if you want peace and quiet, but if you prefer to be in the busiest area, Basco may feel more central. Personally, I loved the slower atmosphere in Mahatao.

All in all, I truly enjoyed my stay at Villa Ferrer because it matched the exact pace of the trip. So I appreciated that our accommodation did not feel loud, commercial, or detached from the destination. Villa Ferrer felt peaceful, warm, and personal — more like a beautiful home base than a typical hotel stay.

So if you are looking for where to stay in Batanes, especially somewhere quiet, scenic, intimate, and thoughtfully designed, Villa Ferrer in Mahatao is a lovely option to consider.

Some places do not need to be loud to feel special.
And in Batanes, that kind of quiet luxury makes perfect sense.
