‘An Underused Tool’: How Regenerative Farmers Are Shielding Spanish Land From Wildfires

Europe’s regenerative farmers are providing vital wildfire protection – but they need more support.

Smouldering scars threaten to flare up across western and central Europe as heatwaves and drought continue to fuel the risk of wildfires.

Near Athens, spreading flames forced further evacuations after a mid-air collision between two firefighting helicopters killed a Greek and a Danish national on Sunday.

It is the latest tragedy in a summer that has already forced around a third of a million people from their homes across France and Spain.

It is yet to be seen whether this fire season will beat 2025’s already-alarming record: 10,000 square kilometres burned across Europe – spurred on by temperatures rising more than twice as fast as the global average.
