It’s been a little too quiet around here lately- nearly two months, to be exact, and for that, I apologize! But I promise, while I may have been quiet, I certainly haven’t stopped eating, discovering, and thinking about all of you. Life has simply been unusually busy, but I’ve continued to make my way around San Diego’s ever-evolving dining scene, taking notes (and plenty of bites) along the way. And now I’m back with five exciting new restaurants you need to try, including four new spots in La Jolla that are quickly making waves. From sophisticated fine dining to lively, flavor-packed favorites, these newcomers are giving us plenty of reasons to get out and eat. Consider this my official return to the blog and my delicious attempt to make up for lost time!
La Jolla has welcomed a truly special addition to its fine-dining scene with Lucien, an intimate 30-seat restaurant. Lucien presents a highly curated tasting menu that blends French precision with Japanese influence, showcasing peak-season ingredients sourced from local farms and fishermen. The experience unfolds through a series of beautifully composed courses, from delicate seafood and caviar to fire-kissed meats and inventive desserts, with a wood-fired hearth adding a subtle element of rusticity to the otherwise refined cuisine. The setting is equally memorable, beginning in a bright, airy courtyard before transitioning into a moody, intimate dining room. Sophisticated without feeling stuffy, Lucien offers the kind of immersive, highly personalized dining experience that feels less like dinner and more like an evening-long culinary journey.
pros: top-notch service, and the waiter offered an impressive, personalized kitchen tour
cons: the quality of the desserts did not match the quality of the meal; weak vegetarian menu, difficult acoustics – it felt like someone was behind me whispering in my ear throughout the meal
must order: menu is a set prix-fixe
UTC now has a few of my favorite restaurants, and Teleferic is on my fave list. Lively and full of energy, the space offers a beautiful interior with an inviting bar at its center. Authentic Spanish tapas and paellas are the highlights of the menu and are delivered in stunning presentations. With its vibrant atmosphere, beautiful setting, and consistently delicious food, Teleferic is the kind of restaurant that makes you want to return again and again.
pros: fun vibe, great service, yummy tapas across the board
must order: the crab croquetas topped with tuna sashimi and spicy aioli, tuna tacos, and wagyu empanadas with manchego crackers and mojo sauce.
UTC welcomes yet another standout addition to its dining scene, and this one is poised to become a local favorite. At JOEY, guests are greeted by polished, attentive staff and offered a complimentary glass of bubbly while gathering around a glowing fire bowl before their meal. The globally inspired menu leans heavily into vibrant Asian flavors, alongside a variety of contemporary favorites designed for sharing. Inside, the restaurant strikes a balance between upscale sophistication and coastal warmth, with moody lighting, rich wood accents, plush seating, and stylish modern décor that creates an energetic yet inviting atmosphere.
pros: great service, delicious dishes, lively atmosphere
cons: a bit pricey at $215 for 3 people, no alcohol, two appetizers, three mains for brunch
must order: everything we ordered was outstanding: mini short ribs french dip, the korean fried cauliflower, the ahi poke bowl, and the mediterranean bowl
Thank goodness Pete’s Coffee shop was replaced with a bright and inviting new cafe. No offense, but I stayed away from Pete’s – I found the vibe to be so dreary. The new owners have changed the brown walls into hues of blue, perfect for the coastal setting. There’s ample outdoor seating, and the menu is large enough for those who want to linger while they get some work done, while breathing in the ocean air.
pros: charming cafe, lots of outdoor seating, barista follows requests
must order: they made me one of the better iced-matcha lattes I’ve yet to sip on
La Fresheria delivers the kind of laid-back coastal dining experience that feels effortlessly refined. The atmosphere is casual and welcoming, but the menu leans elevated, showcasing impeccably fresh seafood with bright flavors and thoughtful presentation. Each dish strikes a balance between comfort and sophistication, whether it’s delicately prepared fish or seasonal accompaniments that let the ingredients shine. This seafood spot captures the essence of Southern California dining: relaxed, fresh, and quietly impressive without trying too hard.
pros: $30 corkage fee, so it’s worthwhile to bring a nice bottle from home to enjoy your meal with
must order: the clams and sardines over a salsa verde will make you want to lick your plate dry, and definitely order a side of homemade fries- they’re the best in town!
